This dramatic photograph, taken from the lighthouse tender Rose, shows rough waves breaking against Tillamook Rock on December 1, 1934. With the derrick washed away by the storm, a temporary mast was erected from which to string a breeches buoy to get keepers, repair crew and supplies on and off the Rock.
