Built in 1855, the 80-foot-long, oak-framed Cross Rip Lightship LV-6, was considered a sturdy vessel for her time. By 1918, she had had several refits, including copper sheathing on her hull. Unfortunately, this did not keep the ice from crushing her in February of 1918. (Photo courtesy Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy) Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2021
