Desolate St. George Reef Light Station, offshore from Crescent City, California, is where Edward H. Schneider started his 28-year lighthouse keeping career in 1930. It must have been a relief to be transferred to Alcatraz after being “confined on the Rock” at St. George Reef for his first year of service.
