A vintage postcard view showing the finished, enclosed second light tower on Mississippi’s Ship Island. Whenever visitors came to Ship Island Lighthouse, Dan McCall would entertain them with stories, curios and commentaries that were “spicily interspersed with loud and unexpurgated cussing, which everybody who knew him accepted and overlooked as part of the personality of this picturesque custodian.” Other newspapers described him as “jolly, fat, full of fun,” and “as locally famous for his boisterous profanity as he was for his hearty hospitality.” (Lighthouse Digest archives)
