According to Elizabeth McCall’s memoir, Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, Mississippi, was named by Major General Benjamin Butler in honor of his native state because everything for its construction came from there, not because of the USS Massachusetts as has been supposed by historians. Elizabeth broke into the fort’s sealed cisterns to get emergency water some years after the Civil War had finished and the fort was abandoned.
