In 1982 when Heron Neck Lighthouse was fully automated, its Coast Guard keepers were removed and the lighthouse station was closed, boarded up, and left abandoned to the elements. The lighthouse is located on Green Island near Vinalhaven, Maine. The island is also known as Greens Island. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo by Tammy Wolfe.)
