Andrew W. Bennett lived at Heron Neck for 18 years, from 1930 to 1948. He had previously served in the position of 2nd assistant keeper, 1st assistant keeper and then head keeper at Maine’s Saddleback Ledge Lighthouse from October 1920 to October 1930. Bennett served at Heron Neck Lighthouse during the 1939 transition time when the Lighthouse Service was dissolved and merged into the Coast Guard. By 1941 he decided not to continue as a civilian keeper and joined the Coast Guard, however he remained as the head keeper at Heron Neck until his retirement in 1948. Bennett is buried at the Cummings Cemetery in Vinalhaven, Maine. (Photograph courtesy of the Vinalhaven Historical Society.)
