Horace Foster Norton (1843-1911) is shown here at the age of 66 in 1909. As a young man, he assisted keeper Wellman Spear, Sr. in the 1860 rescue. In 1866, he became an assistant lighthouse keeper at Whitehead Lighthouse a, position he held for two years. In 1874, he became the first keeper of the newly established Whitehead Life-Saving Station on Maine’s Whitehead Island. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
