Before a fog bell was installed at Heron Neck Lighthouse, Nemo, the dog of lighthouse keeper Levi Farnham, had been trained to listen for vessels at sea and then bark when the fog rolled in. The dog’s barking was credited with saving the lives of many mariners. When the dog retired, he was replaced by Rover, who was also trained to bark when the fog rolled in. Levi Farnham was the keeper at Heron Neck from 1900 to 1911, when he died of natural causes while on the job. His son, Joseph, assumed the job of keeper until a new keeper, Fred Robbins, arrived at the station later that year. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
