This sketch of Heron Neck Lighthouse was done by Ernie DeRaps who was stationed as a Coast Guard keeper at Heron Neck Lighthouse from 1959 to 1961. Many of DeRaps’ memories of lighthouse life were recorded in the dual-titled book that he coauthored with his wife Pauline: Lighthouse Keeping and Light Housekeeping. He recalled that life at the stag station was rather routine with the standard modern lighthouse duties such as filing weather reports and watching for vessels in distress. He recalled that during inclement weather, the lighthouse fog signal produced a three second blast every 30 seconds. On those nights, DeRaps said he got very little sleep. In his book, DeRaps recounted finding the grave stones of Mr. & Mrs. Green, whom the island is apparently named after. DeRaps said he will never forget the words inscribed on Mr. Green’s grave stone, which read: “Stop my friend, as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you must be, Prepare for death, then follow me.”
