In a message to passing vessels, the Coast Guard lighthouse keepers at Heron Neck Lighthouse in the late 1970s painted a smiley face on the end of one of the oil tanks, and the words ‘Have A Nice Day’ on the others. The smiley face was not painted at an angle as it appears here. The tank had to be tilted due to the hole near the top of the fuel tank. The oil storage tanks were removed many years ago. The structure behind the oil tanks is the fog signal building that was built to replace the fog bell and the fog bell tower. During this time, fuel oil and fresh water for the cistern were brought to the island by the 180-foot Coast Guard Buoy Tender SPAR, which was stationed out of Southwest Harbor, Maine.
