Photo Caption:

The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse was lighted for the first time at midnight on June 10, 1909. The first keeper, Wilhelm Baumgartner, a bachelor, invited nearby residents to a midnight supper celebration with a meal prepared by Ethel Bassett, wife of assistant keeper George C. Bassett. Approximately 40 people showed up. Look closely to the far right and you will see a horse drawn carriage. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
