This 1906 photo of Walter White shows him in full 1st assistant keeper’s uniform, as designated by the “1” in his lapel insignia. According to the lighthouse appointment register, he was an “acting assistant” during that time, but it wasn’t a permanent appointment yet. Perhaps if the San Francisco earthquake had not occurred in April of that year, he would have stayed on and started his lighthouse keeping career then, instead of seven years later.
