Keeper Roscoe G. Lopaus is sitting with his family at Baker Island Lighthouse c. 1884. Roscoe had a 28-year career, starting at Nash Island Light (1881 – 1888); then Blue Hill Bay Lighthouse (1888 – 1895); and Saddleback Ledge Light (1895 – 1896), all in Maine, before moving permanently to Massachusetts. He then came to Minot’s Ledge Light in 1896, and after nine years there, went to Long Point Lighthouse in 1905 and then on to Race Point Light for just a few months in 1909, after which he retired at the age of 64. He died in Chelsea, MA, only three years later in 1912, but was brought back home to Maine to be buried at the Hillrest Cemetery in Tremont, his hometown, where his parents and other family members were buried.
