One summer, Gertrude Wellisch brought a car out to Sand Island and parked it by the dock, leaving the key in the ignition. “Anybody who needs to haul stuff around,” she announced, “go ahead and use my car.” The rusted-out car, sinking in the mud, in the forefront, is a 1930 Chevy Coupe that belonged to Gertrude Wellisch. The National Park Service identified the model of the car from the number on the serial block. It is believed that the car in the back, a Model T, is from another island family. Both cars are in the woods near the dock at East Bay on Sand Island. Wouldn’t it be neat if the old car could be at least partially restored and put on display somewhere on the island, perhaps by the lighthouse? (Courtesy Apostle Islands National Lakeshore)
