Born in 1872, Annie Haskell married Chatham Lighthouse keeper James Thurston Allison on November 8, 1890. In a wedding ceremony officiated by Rev. C.T. Hatch on August 16, 1924, their daughter, Esther Mae Allison (1896-1949), married Dwight Francis Emery in the lower room of the tower of Chatham Lighthouse. When Annie Allison died unexpectedly at the lighthouse on December 23, 1927, her husband, keeper James Allison Thurston, became so grief-stricken that he died of shock. The couple left behind one child still residing at home, a son, 12-year-old Clarence, who went to live with his older brother and sister-in-law. Clarence grew up to join the Coast Guard where he served on the Cross Rip Lightship, and was a surfman at a lifeboat station. He also served as a temporary lighthouse keeper at Wood End Lighthouse, Highland (Cape Cod) Lighthouse, Baker Island Lighthouse, and Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse, all in Massachusetts; and Rose Island Light in Rhode Island, and Gull Rock Light in Connecticut.
