Undated historic photo of Egg Rock Lighthouse in Nahant Bay, Massachusetts showing the lighthouse keeper and his family sitting on the rocks by the tower. In 1922, the government sold the Egg Rock light keeper’s house with the stipulation that it be removed from the island. While the new owner’s crew was attempting the remove the structure, the ropes snapped as the house was being lowered down to a barge and the structure rolled onto its side and crashed into the ocean. It was a total loss. However, the tower itself remaining standing for a number of years before it crumbled into the ocean in 1927. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
