Orval Risdon married Bertha Poulson on April 22, 1931 and began service at Tillamook Rock on May 15th. Apparently, she couldn’t wait for him to go on his first leave as a month later on June 14th, she came out to Tillamook Rock to be with him for the day. In addition to Tilly, Orval served at Smith Island, WA; Cape Blanco, OR; and New Dungeness, WA. Unfortunately, while at New Dungeness Lighthouse in 1944, he suffered a heart attack and received a medical discharge from the Coast Guard. He died five years later at the very young age of 45.
