In 1897, the Sand Point Lighthouse in Baraga became one of the earliest lighthouses to be moved because of erosion. This was done without the help of modern machinery. Large square timbers were laid at the back of the building. Then the entire brick lighthouse was jacked up onto the timbers and coated with grease and then pulled and shoved 200-feet inshore to its new location.
