Photo Caption:

The two Coastguardsmen were dispatched from the Cleveland Coast Guard Station, as shown here, on Whiskey Island in Cleveland, Ohio. The station, with its 60-foot-tall observation tower, was built in 1940, and decommissioned and closed by the Coast Guard in 1976. It was from here that the Coastguardsmen travelled by ice skiff to the lighthouse that can be seen in the left in the photo, way in the distance, where the bomb was reported as being placed. The restored station is now on the National Register of Historic Places. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
