On a drizzly April day in 1893, hundreds of dignitaries and patriotic Americans gathered at the Twin Lights to dedicate the 135-foot Liberty Pole and hear the Pledge of Allegiance recited for the first time as our national oath of loyalty. The ceremony kicked off several days of patriotic celebration that coincided with the opening of the Chicago World’s Fair. The Twin Lights site was chosen because it was the first glimpse of America for passengers on ships coming across the Atlantic from Europe. Dignitaries and military officials are shown here posing with Mrs. H. R. P. Stafford who has the famous John Paul Jones flag on her lap. To learn more about the events of this historic date in history, you can read the full story “1893 Event Marked Official Start of the Pledge of Allegiance” that appeared in the January/February 2009 edition of Lighthouse Digest. That story can also be found in the archives on-line at LighthouseDigest.com.
