Maine native Sumner I. Kimball (1834-1923), the only man to ever serve as the General Superintendent of the U.S. Life-Saving Service (1878-1915), was not self-promoting. His promotional efforts were focused on publicizing the accomplishments of the United States Life-Saving Service, which is often referred to as the sister organization of the United States Lighthouse Service. His position ended in 1915 when the Life Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service were merged to create the United States Coast Guard. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
