Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman (1823-1900) was onboard the Lighthouse Service tender Iris after the Grant incident. Known as “The Ohio Icicle” he was a U S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Ohio. He served as the Secretary of the Treasury from 1877 to 1881 and Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898. He unsuccessfully ran for president three times–in 1880, 1884 and 1888. He is probably best remembered as the author of the Sherman Antitrust Act. One of his brothers was noted Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. He died in Washington, DC and is interned at the Mansfield City Cemetery in Mansfield, Ohio.
