Capt. Carlile Pollock Patterson (August 14, 1816–August 15, 1891) was one of the notable people onboard the Lighthouse Service tender Iris after the USRC Grant incident. Patterson was appointed as the 4th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1874, a position he held until his death. He was a personal friend of President Ulysses S. Grant, and members of the Grant administration socialized at Patterson’s home, The Brentwood Mansion. Interestingly, The Brentwood Mansion was built by famous architect Benjamin H. Lartrobe who designed the elaborate Franks Island Lighthouse that collapsed in 1820 just as it was being completed. Sadly, The Brentwood Mansion no longer stands. Patterson is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
