Newport’s Goat Island Lighthouse after a new fence was installed around the lighthouse, thanks to the efforts of the American Lighthouse Foundation. One of the little known gruesome facts about Goat Island stems from a trial, held in Newport, Rhode Island on July 10-12, 1723, of twenty-six pirates who were all convicted of piracy and sentenced to death. Multitudes of people came to witness the mass hanging of the twenty-six men that took place on July 19, 1723. They were all buried on the north end of Goat Island, in the shore between the high and low water marks. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo by Susan Brown.)
