Prudence Island Lighthouse in Rhode Island as it appears today. It was once the original Goat Island Lighthouse. In 2000 the Coast Guard granted a 20-year historic preservation lease for the lighthouse to the American Lighthouse Foundation. However, when the Prudence Island Conservancy, which had never requested a preservation lease from the Coast Guard for the lighthouse, found out that the lighthouse was now under the care of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), they protested. However, the Prudence Island Conservancy never bothered to give the courtesy of contacting the American Lighthouse Foundation to politely ask them to relinquish their lease on the lighthouse in favor of them. Instead they contacted the media and their congressional delegation to protest loudly. Although the American Lighthouse Foundation was under no obligation do to so, they gladly relinquished their lease so that the locals could restore and maintain their lighthouse, something ALF would have done sooner if they had actually known that the Prudence Island Conservancy had wanted the lighthouse.
