Photo Caption:
The Cape Florida Lighthouse as it appeared in 1950. At this time a fence had been built around the lighthouse. The door to the lighthouse was sealed to prevent public access. A ladder was installed on the exterior of the lighthouse to provide only authorized access to the tower. It was thought that by making the ladder start high enough above the ground, vandals could not reach it and climb to the top. They were wrong. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
