As Ray Dunson’s health was deteriorating, he witnessed a major change while stationed at Mukilteo Lighthouse in Washington when the United States Lighthouse Service, an organization that had been a major part of nearly all of his entire life from childhood through adulthood, was dissolved and its duties were taken over by the United States Coast Guard. Mukilteo Lighthouse, shown here, was Ray Dunson’s last lighthouse. Retiring in 1939 due to medical problems, he passed away a short time thereafter. Little could he have imagined that two lighthouse stations where he once lived would be lost to erosion and the keeper’s homes that he worked so hard to maintain at two other lighthouses would be demolished by the government.
