From approximately 1910 to 1917, Katie and Ray Dunson lived in the large duplex shown in this aerial photo of the Cape Arago Light Station at the entrance to Coos Bay near Charleston, Oregon. The couple had many fond memories of life there. They especially enjoyed it when Ray’s father, Joseph, was transferred there in 1913 and they were able to live side by side until Ray was transferred to Willapa Bay Lighthouse. Katie and Ray’s first child, Mary Eleanor, was born at Cape Arago and later in life she recorded he mothers memories of life there. Katie Dunson had recalled that on the land side of the bridge was an ancient Indian burial ground which had been somewhat desecrated by outsiders before her time, something that greatly disturbed her. The duplex no longer stands and the bridge shown in this image was demolished in 2013 and the island is now under the control of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians and is off limits to the public.
