Ray Edgar Dunson, shown in this photograph, spent nearly all of his life living at lighthouses. In 1891 his parents moved from Wisconsin to the west coast where his father, Joseph Dunson, became as assistant keeper at the Point Wilson Lighthouse. Joseph Dunson then went on to serve Patos Island Lighthouse from 1894 to 1898. Following that, from 1898 to 1900 he served at New Dungeness Lighthouse, and in 1900 he became the head keeper at Heceta Head Lighthouse where he served until 1904 when he was transferred to Smith Island Lighthouse. In 1913 Joseph Dunson became the head keeper at Cape Arago Lighthouse where he served until 1920. Following in his father’s footsteps, Ray Dunson started his official lighthouse career in 1905 when he became an assistant keeper under his father, Joseph, at Smith Island Lighthouse where he served until 1909 when he was transferred to Cape Arago Lighthouse.
