In later years the Tower Gas Station in Sherburne, New York was purchased by George and Mary Lewis. The Lewis family eventually purchased the building next door which at one time was known as The Beacon Restaurant. By 1943 the Lewis family, as well as selling gasoline, conducted various enterprises at the location that including a dry goods store. In 1946 the restaurant was officially opened and in 1950 an addition was made to the building. Over the years the gas station continued to sell ESSO gasoline. In 1972, ESSO was largely replaced in the U.S. by the Exxon brand after it bought Humble Oil, while ESSO remained widely used elsewhere (Photograph courtesy of Cynthia Lewis, Lewis’ Restaurant, Sherburne, NY)
