Capt. Ed Cubanski, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, (l) and Charles “Skip” Bowen, Vice President of Government Relations at Bollinger Shipyards and a former Master Chief Petty Office in the United States Coast Guard, along with members from Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s Color Guard, stand behind the new tombstone of lighthouse keeper Kathleen Moore during its dedication ceremony. Although Kathleen Moore never actually served in the Coast Guard, the tombstone honors her with the recognition of “Coast Guard Heroine,” because the Coast Guard can trace its heritage back to August 7, 1789 when all lighthouses were federalized, and to July 7, 1939 when the U.S. Bureau of Lighthouses was dissolved and its duties were taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard. The tombstone was paid for by Bollinger Shipyards.
