Photo Caption:

Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse as it appears today. Stephen Moore and his daughter were originally the keepers of a tower that was built here in 1808, but it was destroyed in a hurricane in 1821 and since it was before the days of the camera, there are no photographs of the tower or other images of the tower known to exist. It was replaced by this tower in 1823 and Kathleen Moore maintained the light until her retirement in 1878. The keeper’s house that the Moore family lived in at Black Rock Harbor Light Station was demolished in 1879 and photos of the structure have yet to be located. Because the lighthouse is located on Fayerweather Island, it also known as Fayerweather Island Lighthouse and it has also been called the Black Rock Lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest photo)
