This photo of Kathleen Moore, keeper of the Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse, was taken after she retired and shortly before she died. Over the years, many accounts of her life referred to her as Catherine Moore and others referred to her as Kate Moore. After she retired in 1878, in the June 29, 1879 edition of the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper she told a reporter, “I have seen so many terrible disasters and shipwrecks that I shudder whenever I recall them, and generally endeavor to forget about them. Being accustomed to so many fearful sights, I did not mind them, but my courage is gone from me now and the impression they have left on my mind is one only of horror.” (Lighthouse Digest archives, Bridgeport Public Library photo.)
