This vintage image of Halfway Rock Lighthouse shows that the shades were drawn to protect the Fresnel lens and its components from the harmful rays of the sun. The tower, made from granite quarried in Maine, was later painted white. At one time the dome of the lantern room was painted red. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
