Stonemason Mike Sylvester, of CCI Construction, is shown here hanging 80 feet down the side of the Graves lighthouse tower, restoring the stonework. Some of the granite blocks had cracked near the base, so Mike drilled 1/2” wide holes into the stone, filled them with epoxy and with long 1/2” stainless steel bolts, and then covered the damaged areas with grout made from granite from the same Rockport quarry that provided the stone for the construction of Graves Light from 1903-05. Because the ledge is covered at high tide, the crew can’t use staging from the ground up, so they have to suspend the workers by ropes from the top down.
