This old cabinet photo was labeled on the back, “Life-Saving Station crew, Windsor Beach,” which was actually the life saving station in Charlotte, New York. On January 3, 1902 the entire crew of this life-saving station were awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for an amazing rescue that they participated in on December 14, 1902. They were keeper George N. Gray, and surfmen Frank B. Chapman, W. Vernon Downing, Charles Eastwood, Mial E. Eggleston, George E. Henderson, Ira S. Palmer, Delbert Rose and Lester D. Seymour. While all of the men in this photo probably, at one time, or another, risked their lives to save others, we don’t know if any of these men were part of the same crew who were awarded the medals. However, the strange thing about this photo is that nearly all of the men are all holding rifles, which would be most unusual at a life-saving station. Did they all go on a hunting expedition? We know nothing about the men in this photo or what their lives were like.
