Vintage undated aerial photograph of North Head Lighthouse shows the dangerous cliffs that have caused a number of rescues to take place over the years. In 1923 the lighthouse keeper’s wife apparently committed suicide by jumping from the cliffs. North Head Lighthouse is listed as being located at one of the windiest locations in the United States. It is not unusual to have winds of 100 miles per hour at the lighthouse. Because of high velocity of the winds, in 1902 the United States Weather Bureau built a weather station between the North Head Lighthouse and the keeper’s homes. On January 21, 1921 the weather station recorded winds at 126 miles per hour before the instruments themselves were blown away. The weather station was eventually discontinued and demolished in 1955.
