This 1896 sketch by Carlton T. Chapman shows the crew of the Armeria delivering supplies to West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Maine. In describing this scene, Kirk Munroe wrote at the time; “Each of the men is provided with a wooden shoulder-yoke, such as are used by farmers for carrying milk pails. From each end of the yoke depends a chain terminating in an iron hook. These hooks catch on to the stout wire bails of the oil cases, and thus a man is enabled to carry two cases, or about 120 pounds, at a trip. On his return from the oil-house he brings two “empties” which are ultimately refilled. To each of these is attached a tag bearing the name of the light station, the date on which the case emptied, and a note as to its condition signed by the light keeper.”
