Bruce Roberts (l) of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and Tim Harrison (r) of Lighthouse Digest examine the chunks of blacktop and sand bags protruding from the sand. The chunks of black top were dumped there in November 1994, by park rangers in a desperate middle-of-the-night attempt to stop the rising storm waters from Hurricane Gordon from toppling the lighthouse. It worked. The lighthouse was saved, but only for the time being. Back to the edition of: December 1997
