In 1856 Pleasonton sent a letter to James Buchanan seeking his help for compensation for his heroic deed in saving America’s most valuable documents. In fact, he said in his letter to Buchanan “for saving these papers, the British government, had that been done for it, would probably have given me many thousand pounds.” It is unknown whether the government ever authorized any reward to Pleasonton, however it is doubtful. Sketch by Melissa Pelletier.
