After Labor split off to become a separate cabinet post, William Cox Redfield became the first Secretary of the new Department of Commerce in 1913. He was born in 1858 in Albany, NY, where he attended public schools and received home schooling. After jobs with the Pittsfield (MA) Post Office and as a traveling salesman he joined the J.H. Williams Company, manufacturers of steel and iron forgings and later became president of the firm. A member of the 62nd Congress of the United States, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1912 and declined to seek reelection. He was appointed the first Secretary of the new Department of Commerce by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913 and served until 1919 when he resigned to engage in banking and investment business in New York City and Brooklyn, NY. He died on June 13, 1932.
