Leland Rose, one of the last living members of the United States Lighthouse Service, inspected this replica of the Butler Flats Lighthouse at the New Bedford, MA Whaling Museum in 1998. The replica of Butler Flats Lighthouse shown here was made in 1918 by Eldridge Cromwell, a ship’s carpenter who worked at Kelly’s Shipyard in New Bedford from 1914-1919. Leland Rose served as keeper of the Butler Flats Lighthouse from 1943 to 1946. On April 30, 1998, the City of New Bedford, MA relighted the Butler Flats Lighthouse, which had been restored by the city, 100 years to the day of its first illumination in 1898. In 2001, the City of New Bedford received another replica of the lighthouse built by American Lighthouse Foundation volunteer Don Perkins. That replica is now on display at the New Bedford Tourism Office on the city’s waterfront.
