William Wincapaw, born in Friendship, Maine, started the tradition of the Flying Santa. He was a legend in his own time, his life could read like a novel. He is credited with saving drowning children, rescuing stranded fishermen, flying medicine and supplies to remote locations, surviving plane crashes, meeting Charles Lindberg and flying gold over the mountains of Bolivia.
