Elson Small brought an old Model T converted into a truck out to St. Croix Island. A plow was hitched to the truck and it was used to plow the Smalls’ garden. In “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife”, Connie wrote that she learned to drive the truck and tried hard to make straight furrows in the garden, but someone told her they were the “crookedest straight furrows” he had ever seen. Connie and Elson had several cats on the island, including Scottie, the black cat depicted here.
