The Saint Croix Island International Historic Site is on shore near the island at Red Beach, Maine, south of Calais. Visitors can view the island offshore and read interpretive signs telling the story of the 1604 French settlement. There are also lifesize statues of Passamaquoddy Indians and French settlers, such as this one depicting Pierre Dugua, leader of the French expedition. Back to the edition of: Aug/Sep 2004
