Hunting Island Light Station, Beaufort, SC. The 121 foot high tower was hit by an earthquake in August of 1885. The quake which lasted about four minutes was so violent that two Assistant Keepers in the watch room at the time could not stand up without hanging on to the railing. The Second Assistant Keeper was on the upper balcony and stated that he "was thrown from the dome to the balcony railing, back and forth." Back to the edition of: July 1999
