Photo Caption:

This image of the current Devils Island Lighthouse shows it before its braces were added. It was originally a self supporting cylinder, but high winds of the area caused the tower to sway and shake so much that the lighthouse keepers complained that the motion would actually extinguish the lamp. It also instilled fear into whoever was on duty in the lantern room. Photo courtesy of the United States Coast Guard.
