Photo Caption:

Two Bush Island, Maine, as it appeared when Fred Batty was stationed there. Batty and the other keepers kept the station in immaculate order. However, when the station was automated in 1964, it was abandoned and left to the elements. The government made no efforts to find a caretaker. Instead, in 1974, the Coast Guard brought in the U.S. Army’s Green Berets who, in a demolition exercise, blew up the historic keeper’s house, thereby destroying a vital part of lighthouse history. We wonder what lighthouses keepers like Fred Batty would have to say about this today?
