Although the privy jutted out over the water, being attached to the structure, the keeper did not have to venture outdoors at the Volusia Bar Lighthouse that was established in 1886 at the entrance to the St. Johns River near DeLand, Florida. Although the light from the tower was discontinued in 1916, it remained as an active fog signal and a keeper remained on duty until 1963. In 1938 the U.S. Lighthouse Service keeper stationed here was murdered and the lighthouse was ransacked. The crime was never solved. In the 1974 a fire set by vandals destroyed the structure.
